How To Protect Yourself Against Wire Fraud

There are several wire transfers involved in a real estate transaction and you need to be aware of how to protect yourself against fraudulent activity.  We want to help protect you from this but first remember, you should always call to verify wiring instructions prior to sending funds, that is rule number one.

The culprit  will most likely attempt to digitally mislead you, your agent, your lender, or the title company involved with the transaction.  They are looking for your personal information.  They do this by sending “fishing” emails attempting to get you to click on a devious link. Once you click on this link they have you.

Always pay attention to the sender of any email, not the signature of the senders email.  Here is an example of an email that may be sent to you during the transaction from a hacker.

As you can see the signature may say it came from Sam Smith with Example Real Estate, and you are indeed working with Sam Smith as your real estate agent.  However here is where you should look further, the actual sender of the email is lkjoedo@gmail.com.  Don’t be fooled, call to verify everything prior to sending funds.
